Effect of Paclobutrazol on Shoot Growth , Flowering , Fruit Set , and Fruit Development of ¢¥ Fuji ¢¥ Apple Trees

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of two-year application of paclobutrazol on shoot growth, flowering, fruit set, and fruit growth of 12-year old `Fuji¢¥ apple trees.
Eight grams of paclobutrazol spread on the bark in the late season of 1983 inhibited shoot growth significantly in 1984, but it was not effective at the lower rates treated either on the trunk bark or soil. However, repeated application of paclobutrazol in the spring of 1985 reduced shoot growth effectively in the current growing season even at the lower rates.
Fruit set increased at all rates of paclobutrazol in 1984, but it was not affected in 1985 probably due to excessive fruiting in the previous year.
Diameter(D), length(L), L/D ratio, weight, and number of fruits were not affected by paclobutrazol in 1984. However, in 1985 fruit length, L/D ratio, and fruit weight decreased, but fruit number and total fruit weight per tree increased at the higher rates(4¡6g/tree).
Numbers of shoots on 2-year old branches increased at the lower rate(2g/tree) of paclobutrazol but decreased at the higher rates (6g/tree) in 1985. Fruit stalk was shortened in proportion to the rate of paclobutrazol.
